Background: In vitro fertilization (IVF) has revolutionized the treatment of infertility worldwide and is increasingly recognized as a critical component of reproductive healthcare in Nigeria. Despite significant advances, the accessibility and success of IVF in Nigeria are hindered by unique challenges, necessitating a comprehensive analysis to inform future improvements.
Objective: To critically review the challenges, successes, and future directions of in vitro fertilization in Nigeria.
Materials: An extensive electronic search of peer-reviewed articles, reports, and gray literature on IVF in Nigeria, published from 2022 to 2024, was conducted using PubMed, Google Scholar, and institutional repositories. Search strategies employed Boolean operators to refine results, focusing on studies addressing barriers to IVF services, clinical outcomes, and emerging innovations. The review prioritized literature in English.
Results: The review highlights key challenges such as high costs, limited availability of specialized centers, cultural stigma, and insufficient regulatory frameworks. Notable successes include improved IVF success rates in specialized clinics and increased awareness among couples seeking infertility treatment. Future directions emphasize policy reforms, capacity building, and enhanced affordability through public-private partnerships.
Conclusion: IVF in Nigeria is a growing yet challenging field. Multisectoral interventions, coupled with targeted research, are vital for addressing barriers and ensuring equitable access to IVF services nationwide.
